Why do I believe what I believe? Why do I believe in God and that He is a personal God who sent His Son to die for me so that I may have a relationship with Him? Why do I believe that this God is worth changing my life from living for myself to living completely and utterly for Him? Is it worth it? Is it even true?
In the midst of apologetics and philosophy and theology and all of the forms of deeper thinking, it is so easy to get lost in the whats and forget about the whys. So you believe the Bible is true. Great. Why do you believe it’s true? So you believe that this Jesus is worth giving up riches and control of your life. Cool. Why is He worth it?
For most everyday, ordinary people, the mumbo-jumbo answers produced from arguments and historical evidence just doesn’t cut it. Ultimately, it’s not the grade on that one test for your major in college that caused you to obtain the career you have. Yes, it was a stepping stone to get there, but it was the perseverance for love of that subject or career that spurred you onwards. (Some might interject that they merely pursued money, however, there are many high paying jobs, so what made you choose doctor over engineer or such careers as those? Exactly.)
The simple answer is: He is the only thing this world has to offer that is worth giving up everything for. And that is because He gave up everything in this world, including life itself, for me. And not only that, but in giving up His life and then taking it back, He gave me the opportunity for life beyond the confines of this world—even while living in it!
I believe what I believe and in Whom I believe because there is freedom in belief. There is the freedom to hope, and have insurmountable joy and unbroken peace even in the worst of circumstances. Why would I trade that for anything less?
So many people search and search for love and happiness and peace, and yet He’s right there beside them, whispering in their ears, “Come to me and I will lavish my love on you whom I knitted in your mother’s womb—I will make your joy complete—I will take up your heavy burdens and give you rest.”
This is a mere glazing of the truth God has made plain to me in my life. This is a simple post. Just like the Gospel.
God created this world to be perfect. But humanity became condemned to death and separation from God when we sinned against Him—He is holy and just, therefore sin can have no part with Him. BUT—and here’s the best part!—BUT God did not want death to be our end. No, He loves us SO much that He sent His own Son, Jesus, in Whom there was NO SIN, to die the most tortuous death deserving of only the most vile of criminals (which in comparison with Jesus, would be all of us—you and me). Jesus took ALL of the sin of the world (past, present, and future!) onto His shoulders and died. But wait, there’s more!
Three days later Jesus rose from the grave. He defeated death! And we may share in that inheritance of eternal life with God. We must only—again it’s so simple—repent from the sinful life we lead before knowing the Truth, and believe in this so simple, and yet so glorious Truth!
Believe me, it changes your life.
